Coming Out of the Station - A primer for beginning model railroaders

Scale
The first decision any model train hobbyist faces is almost certainly related to the question of scale. Put simply, scale is the ratio of the size of the model train to the size of the real thing. Some common scales of models include H, HO, N, and S. For a more complete list and explanation of scale, click here.

Gauge
After scale, the next decision will be the gauge. Again, keeping it simple, gauge refers to the distance between the tracks. For example, typical track gauge is 4' - 8 1/2" between the tracks. For more details concerning gauge, click here.
